Antón Lizardo hosts the headquarters of the Heroic Naval Military School, the main educational and training institution for officers of the Mexican Navy. In 1914, the United States forces occupied the port of Veracruz and attacked the naval school, which at that time was installed in the port, and was heroically defended by its cadets.

There are several legends about Antón Lizardo, the character that gave the town its name: it is claimed that he was a pirate, or an Italian merchant, and even a Jesuit hermit. The formal version is the one investigated by a Chronicler from Veracruz, who found that the name P. Antón Nysardo or Nicardo is clearly read in a document from 1539, who came to New Spain on two occasions, the first time when his ship ran aground near where the building of the Heroic Naval Military School now stands.
